Am I A Candidate?
There are a few important factors that are considered in determining whether any patient is a candidate for laser vision correction:
Eye prescription (refractive error): Every patient has a computerized prescription. LASIK allows the correction of very low to extremely high levels of nearsightedness, astigmatism, or farsightedness. However, even if your prescription falls within the limits of the LASIK procedure, a patient is not necessarily a good candidate, which is why the doctors at Global Laser Vision perform the following additional tests as needed.
Corneal thickness (Pachymetry): An ultrasound machine is used to check the corneal thickness of every patient. This test is vital to be sure that you do not have a very thin cornea or a thinning disorder of the cornea that you may not be aware of. A very thin cornea could make it possible that you are not a good LASIK candidate. In addition, a patient with a mildly thin cornea and a very high prescription may not be a good candidate.
Cornea Topography (Corneal Mapping): A computerized imaging which measures the curvature of thousands of points on the cornea and can detect subtle irregularities of the cornea. This is a state of the art instrument that allows for a color coded map of your cornea to be printed within a matter of seconds.
Pupilometry (Pupil size measurement): Patients with very large pupils may not be appropriate candidates for laser eye surgery.
A complete eye exam: checking for glaucoma, cataracts, the health of the cornea as well as the health of the retina.

So, what is the next step?
The next step is considering whether refractive surgery is right for you. LASIK is an elective procedure. Most importantly, it is vital to choose a doctor who specializes in LASIK and performs the most advanced testing to determine if you are a good candidate.
