The VISX STAR S4 Excimer Laser System
The VISX eye tracking system uses a technology which can track and compensate for eye movement - to ensure accurate placement of the beam.

Our latest excimer laser system represents the most advanced laser technology platform available today. Integrating data collected by the WaveScan WaveFront System, the STAR S4 utilizes these exclusive VISX technologies to deliver precision custom ablations:
- Iris Registration (IR): The first FDA-approved, fully automated, non-contact method of alignment of the correct CustomVue treatment to the corneal site
- Variable Spot Scanning (VSS): Variable beam sizes from as small as 0.65 mm up to 6.5 mm scanned over the treatment area, conserving tissue and optimizing treatment times
- Variable Repetition Rate (VRR): VRR delivers treatment at varying repetition rates, optimizing treatment time
- ActiveTrak 3-D Active Eye Tracking: Captures all 3 dimensions of intra-operative eye movements-no dilation required
- ActiveTrak Automatic Centering: Locates, and then automatically sets the treatment center to the center of the pupil.
VISX laser systems have been used to perform millions of laser vision correction procedures in the U.S. and around the world. Every year, more doctors use VISX lasers to perform laser vision correction surgery than any other system. The VISX STAR S4 can be used in combination with the VISX CustomVue Wavefront device to correct some of the unique imperfections in each individual's eye. This is called wavefront-guided treatments (CustomVue). The VISX STAR S4 can all so be used for conventional LASIK and PRK treatments. The excimer laser produces a beam of cool ultraviolet light. The eye surgeon programs your information into a computer that controls the laser. The laser produces a series of rapid pulses that remove small and precise amounts of corneal tissue. Excimer laser light does not penetrate into the eye and leaves other structures (iris, lens, retina) undisturbed.
The VISX STAR S4 is one of the most advanced systems on the market today. This technologically advanced laser offers faster treatments and corneal tissue sparing using variable spot scanning beam technology, resulting in smoother treatments and an eye tracking system that track eye movements in all three dimensions.
The VISX STAR S4 variable beam technology allows the eye surgeon to treat patients with different laser beam sizes and shapes, determined by each person's unique visual imperfections. The variable spot scanning (VSS) is used in Custom Vue Wavefront guided treatments during the entire procedure and in conventional treatments to create just the blend zone. During Custom Vue Wavefront guided treatments spot sizes varying between .65 to 6.5 mm are used to remove the corneal tissue. These varying spot sizes first create the central optic zones, correcting the myopia and astigmatism while inducing less higher-order aberrations, followed by blending out into the periphery. The VISX STAR S4 Smart Beam technology variable spot scanning (VSS) adjusts beam size and number of pulses of a given beam size according to the 100% unique treatment plan for your eye, minimizing the amount of corneal tissue that needs to be removed and minimizing treatment times.
The VISX STAR S4 excimer laser system produces an extremely smooth treatment surface on the cornea after the procedure. Smoother treatments promote faster healing and result in better visual outcomes. Unlike other laser systems with eye tracking technology the VISX STAR S4 with Active Track requires no pupil dilatation, leading to an even quicker visual recovery time.
The laser also contains an auto-centering eye tracking system, which will automatically compensate for any of your eye movements during the CustomVue treatment or conventional LASIK and PRK. The infrared cameras detect and compensates for any small eye movements by guiding the laser beam to keep it centered precisely over the treatment area. This is the only system that allows the eye surgeon to track eye movements in all three dimensions. Having the laser beam centered correctly on the eye at all times helps ensure precise results.
