Aug 18th, 2016 - Blog

Choosing to eat healthy foods is one of the simplest and effective steps we can take to promote vision and overall eye health. The best part? Eating healthy doesn’t mean giving up on great flavors, or saying goodbye to your favorite foods. From succulent seafood to flavorful fruit, you’ll find plenty of variety in the foods that benefit vision and eye health. Most of the foods on our list also benefit other parts of your body, with heart health at the top of that list. Let’s take a closer look at five foods that will benefit your eye health (and your taste buds!) this summer.

Five Delicious Summer Foods That Benefit Eye Health

Many of the most popular summer foods also happen to be light, tasty, and full of beneficial nutrients. A few pieces of fruit make a great addition to your beach-day cooler, and there’s nothing quite like the flavor of fresh tuna or salmon from the grill. And if you love the taste of a fresh salad, you’re sure to find fun ways to mix and match the items on our eye health list.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in high concentrations in salmon, tuna, and even sardines, help with eye health and may help lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common vision problem for people age 50 and over. According the Harvard School of Public Health, omega-3 fatty acids also benefit heart and cardiovascular health.
  • Leafy Greens – Kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, and other leafy greens are high in lutein and zeaxanthin which aid in eye health care – and may help reduce the risk of AMD and cataracts. If you don’t like the flavor of cooked leafy greens, fresh spinach and crispy romaine lettuce are perfect ingredients in a light, flavorful summer salad.
  • Citrus Fruits – Vitamin C has many health benefits, and its antioxidant properties are important for eye health, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Citrus fruits, including oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines, are high in vitamin C. You can also find vitamin C in peppers, tomatoes, and most types of fruit.
  • Legumes – Chickpeas, black-eyed peas, kidney beans, and all other types of legumes are high in zinc, another important mineral for eye health care. In addition to being a great treat while taking in a summer baseball game, peanuts are also a good source of zinc. Hummus, another easy summer snack, contains a healthy serving of zinc as well.
  • Deep Orange Fruits and Veggies – You’ve probably heard that carrots are great for eye health, and it’s true! Carrots contain beta-carotene, which is beneficial for night-vision and overall eye health care. Beta-carotene is actually a naturally occurring pigment, so you’ll also find it in other tasty orange foods like sweet potatoes, mango, apricot, and cantaloupe.

You may have noticed that many of the food items on our list are quite colorful, and that’s no accident. Colorful fruits and vegetables tend to contain a variety of beneficial nutrients for eye health and overall health. Fruits and vegetables are also ideal on-the-go snacks, so you can even take care of your eye health in between meals. So seek out these flavorful, colorful foods of summer, and enjoy the eye health benefits of a delicious diet!
