Am I A Good Candidate for LASIK?

Who Should Have Lasik?

Many people think about the possibility of LASIK surgery but are afraid they will not be good candidates. Some of these people have been told by uninformed friends or even those associated with the medical community that “you cannot have LASIK if you have cataracts” or “you cannot have LASIK after a certain age.” The fact is that there are many candidates for LASIK who have irregular eye issues, and many older patients do benefit from LASIK surgery. Whether they are good candidates for the surgery can only be determined by a qualified eye professional.

What Are The Requirements for LASIK?

Only a doctor can tell if you are candidate for LASIK, but in general, doctors will not perform the surgery if:

  • Your job prohibits refractive surgery. There are some jobs, such as military positions, that prohibit candidates from having refractive surgery. If you are in one of these positions, a doctor may be unwilling to perform LASIK for you for liability reasons.
  • Your contact or glasses prescription is still changing. If you have had a fairly consistent prescription for the past several years, LASIK may be an option. If your prescription has changed significantly in a short time, however, your eyes may not be ready for this type of surgery.
  • You have a disease that limits healing of wounds. If you are a diabetic or have an autoimmune disease, you may be a poor candidate for LASIK due to possible difficulties in healing.
  • You actively participate in sports. After LASIK surgery, the eyes take time to heal. If you are regularly involved in sports in which you could be injured, LASIK may not be an appropriate treatment.
  • You are under 18 years of age. Currently, doctors do not treat patients under 18 with LASIK.

Are There Options Other Than LASIK?

There are other options for both surgical and non-surgical eyesight correction if you are not a candidate for LASIK. Talk to your doctor about your options.
