Dr. Gholam A. Peyman, a professor of Engineering and Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, was awarded with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation by President Barak Obama. Dr. Peyman was one of the twelve exceptional researchers who were awarded with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Along with the National Medal of Science designations, the award is one of the highest honors the federal government can bestow upon engineers, inventors, and scientists. Along with the other recipients, Dr. Peyman received his award in early 2013 at a White House ceremony.
Dr. Peyman is an ophthalmologist and retina surgeon, who is a very successful inventor with 150 patents. He is most widely-known for inventing Lasik eye surgery, a laser vision correction surgery designed for people with a refractive error to see clearly without spectacles. A wide range of intraocular drug delivery techniques, novel medical devices, laser and optical instruments, methods of diagnosis and treatment, as well as surgical techniques are covered by Dr. Peyman’s inventions. A number of other awards and honors have also been awarded to him, such as an induction into the Hall of Fame of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Stuart D. Flynn, the dean of University of Arizona College of Medicine, also appreciated Dr. Peyman for his “tremendous contribution” and that he deserved this “great national honor.” He also expressed appreciation and pride on behalf of himself, the university’s faculty, and students for having Dr. Peyman as a part of the University. The Lasik inventor not only forms a part of The University of Arizona faculty, but also practices at the Arizona Retinal Specialists.
In the past Dr. Peyman has also been awarded with the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology’s translational research award. He has also been included in the Hall of Fame of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Pioneering studies have also been conducted by Dr. Peyman in the delivery of intraocular drugs in vitreoretinal surgery. The techniques of endoresection and eye-wall resection for intraocular tumors were also established by him. He has also been a pioneer in Retinochoroidal biopsy, RPE transplant, and laser and photodynamic therapy of the retina.
Dr. Peyman himself also expressed how honored he felt and how wonderfully surprised he was for receiving an award for his invention of LASIK eye surgery. He also expressed gratification for the fact that his work on laser vision correction surgery touched so many individuals.
