Current Lasik technology is extremely fast and accurate, but many patients don’t know what their expectations for lasik are. The vast majority of patients are very happy with the outcome of their Lasik surgery. It is very common to be asked if the surgery will completely eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. The true aim for any refractive surgery (Lasik, PRK, ICL, Lasek) is to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. If a patient is under the age of 40, it is typically possible to get excellent vision both far and near after surgery, but that same patient will eventually need reading glasses for near work, or possibly an additional surgical procedure for near vision. If a patient is over 40, then it is possible to do a full distance correction and have the patient use glasses for near, or do a monovision procedure in order to get both functional dist and near vision and possibly only need glasses in specific situations.
